Day 8. A Review: One week of the New Year down. Let's see if my resolutions are still in tact: Name Change: I haven't even approached this, and the more I think of it, maybe i'll skip the Russian all together and just change my name name to Darling. Ever since Clarissa Explains It All, I've always wanted my last name to be Darling. It would be rad to have a brother named Ferguson Darling, as well. Resolution number one: failed. I still have time on this one though, so we'll see. Skateboarding: is pretty impossible right now since Chicago is burried in snow! Not cool, failed. Wardobe. I haven't decreased my wardrobe but I haven't increased at all, either. I'm working on it though, I've seen some pretty boss sales going on and whenever I get time I'm going to shop shop shop- Success! My POSTURE is still terrible, however I think it is better this week than it has been previously. Sometimes when I'm sitting on my chair at work I realize I'm hunching over and I start thinking how I should be in a bell tower and I immediately sit up straight for about 2 minutes and then I forget: failed. I have had hardly NO SUGAR in the last 7 days. I can't even believe it: no candy, no cakes, no milkshakes, no jolly ranchers, no reeses, no nothing! Can you believe that? Around day four I had a killer headache and at one point I think I was shaking when I saw a commercial for a Snickers, but I got through it. I'm invincable. I've also been drinking so much water, my face is always red now. What is that about? SUCCESS! No mustket to be found, yet- however I haven't checked ebay. I seriously want a musket. This is not a joke. I want to hang it in my room. When I told this to my sister, this is the exact conversation we had:

Me: I want a musket so you can get me a gun rack for my birthday.

Sister: You don't even own a gun, let alone many guns that necessitate an entire rack. What are you going to do with a gun rack?

Props to whoever knows where that comes from.

I'm going to keep checking on these because I really want to succeed in 2010!

Day 4: Things that are super rad: I read on Random Anny's Blog that you can donate your old cards to St. Judes Ranch for Children.

Over thirty years ago, wishing to show our donors appreciation for making St. Jude’s Ranch for Children possible, the idea was conceived for turning the previous year’s Christmas cards into "new" cards for the coming season. The recipients were so delighted with their unique "thank you," they requested the children sell them the special cards. And so, the St. Jude’s Ranch Recycled Card Program was born.

I thought this was super rad and I am definitely going to send in all of my old Christmas cards. Some cards are meant to be saved forever, but there are some cards that are better off donated: for instance, I can't even tell you how many cards my family received this year with a freshly snow covered house on the front outlined in mounds of glitter with "Season's Greetings" stamped across the top. I'm still a huge fan of the 'draw a card in sharpie photocopy it, write a long letter and send it to all of your lovies' idea. But if you should have some cards to donate check this site for more info. Forgotten New Year's Resolution: Write more letters.

Day 2. So I know it's only been two days but i'm already killing twenty-ten. I'm excited about how organized I am and I feel even better about the real effort I'm making to cut out bad sugars. It's not as hard as I imagined it however I did have a headache this morning. I got home from work late tonight. After I ate dinner my dog and I cardio-salsaed. It was hysterical. I can't wait to do it again. I never even picked up the book I was going to read yesterday. My vision is wretched. I can't wait to take a bath tomorrow. Do you ever see the Soap and Glory products? I use them all the time. Pure magic:

Day 1. I like that the first day of the New Year is on a Friday. Today was filled with work which is unfortunate since I really did want to try and take a day off... but I felt that the store's visual's were more important. Here was the best part of New Year's Eve: I like to call it "THE FINAL SUPPER" - Lainie's birthday meal and the final dinner before the McKeague 'Biggest Loser competition starts. I'm wining so far. I know this because today I watched my mom eat Halloween candy out of a bucket at the store. I, on the other hand have had NO sugar today, so day 1, going STRONG! Forgotten Resolution: READ MORE- I've been slacking on reading since the store and my ROKU...but I'm really hoping to read one book a month. I know this sounds lackluster and an underachievement, only one book a month, but it's probably all I can manage right now.

Things I wish for 2010: Turn Russian: I'd like to change my last name to something wit a 'kov' in it so I can pretend that I am russian. ex: Biriukova, Kazakova, Malenkov, and so on. To finally own a skateboard: I've been asking for one for years and no one takes me seriously. Listen, jerks, I have a passion to ride the gravel ridden streets of Mokena, IL on a skateboard. I don't want to do any of your fancy tricks, I just want to go up and down the street. I would buy one for myself, but where's the fun in that? Think of how great, and truly happy I'd be, if you were the person who would fulfill a my destiny and four year longing for a Chanel painted longboard. To not decrease the size of my wardrobe: A few weeks ago I went downstairs to ask my mom if we had any more hangers in our house that I could use. Deb spins around, waves her hands in the air, lets the remnants of her 1993 bulls Three-peat sweatshirt fly around her arms like wings and screams in my face "WE CAN'T ACCOMODATE ANYMORE OF YOUR WARDROBE." On this note, I will absolutely be turning the spare bedroom next to mine into a second closet where she will be forced to deal with the ever increasing wardrobe I have. Look out Target, you know that I'm on my way to the store to buy out every rolling rack you have, and Hello New Year's sales, you can bet your bottom dollar I'm going to be all over the internet shopping. I'm talking to you Rodarte. To have better posture: I think it's my generation, but I've spoken with so many people lately who are trying to improve their posture. We are a generation of hunchbacks and even though I am not reproducing, ever, I will gladly help to form the movement for better posture in this lifetime so the children of the future can stand up tall. I am available for public motivational speaking at your local high schools on this subject. To decrease my sugar intake: Now, let's be honest, this will be the biggest challenge I have faced since ... I don't even know when. When people said I was too young to open my own store, I proved them wrong. When people said that I would not have the health to work 60 hours a week, I proved them wrong...and people have said that I cannot give up a life of candy, cakes, and cookies, but in 2010 I will prove them wrong, too! I'm going at this cold turkey, it's the best way to sever ties with something that you loved so dearly for so long. After the sudden death of Brittany Murphy I realized that I have seen my last milkshake... however later that day I went out and had a rootbeer float, but that was then, and this is TODAY! Side note for young entreprenuers: Nicorette made the Nicotine patch- discover something to ween me off of a life of sweets, you'll be rich and famous. Guaranteed. Own a musket. No explanation necessary other than it will probably come in handy when I crash on the Island.

2009 was like a really bad mix drink where you know there are good parts in it, but unfortunately all you are tasting are the more powerful bad parts. Hopefully 2010 will be filled with more happiness and peace... and no more dreams about Simon Cowell as the leader of some terrorist organizations.

You get up, and you're all "oh, it's just another day- Christmas has lost its magic..."but then your sister runs in your room and says "Santa was here" and you still can't wait to get downstairs.

Here is how I cleaned up this year:

The ROKU- to instantly watch NETFLIX! So far I've watched "Back in the Habit" - Mary Tyler Moore as a nun, Elvis as a music loving doctor, it's genius.

KEDS. I've learned these are way more comfortable than VANS.

The Shiatsu Pillow- I'm going to use this every single day of my life. It's incredible if you have neck pain the way I do! Loves it!

My favorite present- GUNS N' ROSES Tour Shirt - Absolutely wore this to Christmas dinner with a black mini and a gold sequin belt. I'm probably going to wear it everyday of my life.

The Kate Spade 2010 planner. I'm going to make a New Year's Res. to use this the ENTIRE year. I always use these books up until April, forget where I put them, or lose them, but this year I'm going to Velcro this thing to my body.

I was lucky enough to get a whole boat load more, but these are some of my highlights. I'm really excited and fortunate for everything I've been afforded this year and I hope things will continue to be smooth... or even... or just calm.

Last night as I was driving to go out I heard this story in the car on NPR and I thought it was HILARIOUS:

Danvers, Mass., has a new scandal a-brewin’ at the local high school.

Apparently, their teenagers say “meep.”

The principal, in an effort to stop the meeping around, recorded an automatic call to all the parents warning them that if their students say or display the word “meep” at school, they’d be suspended.

The trouble was written about in an article in the Salem News. Apparently, the issue escalated from the odd mischievous “meep” in school to a Facebook plan to take meeping to a higher level, according to the principal, Thomas Murray.

“It has nothing to do with the word,” Murray was quoted as saying. “It has to do with the conduct of the students. We wouldn't just ban a word just to ban a word.”

The article explained: “ ‘Murray said he called parents via the automated message phone system warning students not to use the term because ‘it would be seen as going against the request of the administration and cause a disruption to the school day.’”

Murray said students were not using the term to harass another student or a teacher.

"It's really about language and conduct," Murray said. "For me, it boils down to respectful conduct."

“Meep” of course, doesn’t mean anything. There’s the Muppet named Beaker who says “meep” instead of words, the Road Runner who cries either “meep meep,” or “beep beep,” depending on your interpretation, and then there’s the Monty Python Knights who say ‘Ni,” but which could easily be misinterpreted as “Meep.” Essentially, it was a teenage gag, and it would have been a blip on the high school radar except that now it’s gotten semi-national attention.

I think the only way Principal Murray could have delighted his students more would be if he had brought them pizza and served it while wearing a ballerina costume. You know they’ll be celebrating until graduation day and beyond. For the rest of the year, they’ll be wearing smug little smiles whenever they see the poor principal.

It’s almost a reflex that teenagers roll their eyes around adults, but the Danvers kids will probably need goggles to keep their eyeballs in their heads following this debacle.

I don’t know how much experience the Danvers principal has with teenagers, but I’m pretty sure that preemptively censoring meepings will only lead to other silly words, yes, perhaps even sillier words, if there are any.

My personal favorite meaningless word is “D’oh,” which is what Homer Simpson says when he realizes he’s been dumb, and which Principal Murray is probably using daily since banning “meep.”

Still, do we expect the children, who have been told meeps are off-limits, to refrain from zoinks, jeepers, wubbles, zowas, jinkies, and any number of other nonsensical terms that one could pick up off old “Scooby Doo” reruns? Realistically, we should not.

Meep could become a gateway word, leading to not only other ridiculous words, but even to real words that mean something, such as folderol, balderdash, lackadaisical, and dinky. And once they discover the wealth of new vocabulary experiences available to them, faster than a speeding road runner every teenager on the street will be carrying around a dictionary and a thesaurus and using words with more than one syllable, and even learning how to spell these words.

This being the 21st Century, they’ll carry these books as apps in their cell phones, but they’ll have them.

Oh, the horror, tribulation, consternation, chagrin, wretchedness and vexation of having literate teens. And once they can speak and spell, then they might want to talk to us, and we’d have to — brace yourself for this — listen to them.

I know what you’re saying now, “Oh, meep, no,” but yes, it could happen in our lifetimes.

Cross your fingers and hope it doesn’t, but prepare for the worst. Words could happen, and soon.

Truth: I have had zero time to update the blog since I'm tired and I look like a ghost of a girl I once was... the girl who used to get a good night's sleep and work regular hours.

Hopefully now the ship will start running smooth and everyday will get easier and easier to handle. Running your own business is more work than you can ever imagine. Sunday we had our friends and family event and I couldn't have been happier at the turn out, at the entire event.. everything. It was great.

I feel like I should be more excited about tomorrow. I've been waiting for it for so long, and it didn't even seem real until this last month. But now I'm everything rolled into one... excited, scared, nervous, tired... everything.

I, sometimes, still can't believe I made this happen. It didn't even look like it would be possible for a while, but now that it's all tangible I just keep thinking 'I can't fail'

Well I'm so tired but i'm going to try for more regular updates now that things are rolling.

Well, I've been absent due to the recent loss of my best pal. It's so hard to think about waking up in the morning and not seeing her, or taking her outside to see the ducks, and watching her run up to her mountain (a stack of pillows on the couch) when she wants a cookie. It was heartbreaking to see her go, but even worse to watch her suffer. I'm going to miss my pup so much. She was the best dog you could ever hope for. She was the littlest thing, with such a big personality. I love how she hated other dogs and barked at dogs three times the size of her. It's going to be a rough road, and the house seems so empty without her. I wonder if i'll ever have the heart to get another one.

Things That Are Sad: No More Michael Jackson

I thought my mom was joking when she called to tell me that she had seen the news about Michael Jackson. Initially, I was surprised and shocked to think that the King of Pop had passed, but after two short minutes I realized maybe I wasn't that surprised.

But what really shook me was how emotional I became. Even though Michael hadn't had a hit in over 10 years and his face was two seconds away from caving in, it still didn't have any effect, for me, on what he did for pop culture in his glory days.

Some of my most favorite childhood memories were dancing to this Jackson 5 tape my mom gave me when I was five or six. I played that tape until it wore out and we had to buy another. My sister and I made up dance routines to all of Michael's songs and I can remember the exact day my mom brought home The Making Of Thriller from the video store. I played that tape over and over until I knew each move, step for step. Yesterday morning when they replayed the un-edited version of the Thriller video I totally participated in the dance sequence. I bet Michael was laughing up in heaven.

For me, it doesn't matter who he ended up to be, I preserved him where he was when he was the golden boy, and when he was unstoppable. As a style icon, Michael had trademark looks, whether silly or not, he still was a brand, and his image (for a while) was pretty flawless and you can't help but feel bad that it was gone in such an instant.

I'm not sure the sudden emotional out pour i'm having over his untimely death. Maybe there was hope that under that swine flu mask and his umbrellas shielding the sun there was one last hit ready to come out.

And I really don't want to discount Farrah Fawcett - Although I wasn't so familiar with her, and she didn't have the plastic surgery problems Michael had, I feel bad that her death was over shadowed by one of the most popular men ever to live. She will be missed as well.

Next time you see me, ask me to show you the thriller dance, I absolutely will, and then you will die laughing.

One of the best things I've ever randomly picked up in the grocery store has turned out to be one of my most favorite snacks: Pico De Gallo which translates to something ridiculous like 'rooster's neck'. When I found out the translation, I got nervous I was eating something foul, but really, it's just a combination of achopped tomato, onion, and chiles lemon or lime juice, fresh cilantro, cucumber, or radish. DELICIOUS.
I also self diagnosed myself with Celiac's disease which has these symptoms:

* Abdominal cramps, gas and bloating
* Anemia
* Borborygmi (stomach rumbling)
* Coetaneous bleeding
* Diarrhea
* Easy bruising
* Epitasis (nose bleeding)
* Failure to thrive
* Fatigue or general weakness
* Flatulence

Love it.

The point to that whole rant was so far, my favorite version of pico de gallo came from the whole foods! It's delicious! TRY IT - check the prepared food section!

Holla!

Just back from New York and I am all sorts of WIRED! It's like I had 10 drinks of ____________ (insert cool energy drink/ lame starbucks drink here).

I've been working like a maniac since the AM and it's about 11:30 now at night and I'm not even close to being finished. Being away all weeks leaves a lot for you to catch up on when you get back. I HATE leaving New York. It's one of my favorite places and I hope one day when I retire I can move there and enjoy it!

I sucked it up and decided it's best to spend time at home right now, so I'm close to the store, and I can be there in a minute if I have to. The commute right now would be too much with the work that I'm doing. SO I got some new stuff and cleaned up my rooms at the 'rents house to make it comfortable when I'm there. Check it:

Yeah... that is a jar filled with candy. What can I say, I love root canals.

Then, I came home to this mess to deal with: Orders, receipts, mail... oh god the unopened mail.

That's really all except I love watching the Jetsons right now and I'd really like to get the ROKU player that xtal and bru have so I can watch my netflix right on my TV!

Things I Suck At: A List.

Here are things I really suck at lately:

+ Answering my phone
- It's not that I don't want to, it's that it's never around when I need it OR i'm
on the other line talking and I don't pick up and then I forget to call you back.
+ Writing back to emails
- Sort of the same as the phone/ I'll read your email on the phone and then try and
remember to reply once I get home because I don't like writing emails on the
iphone and then I never do.
+ Naming things that don't require names
- I have gotten some great new things in the past few weeks and I haven't even
given them names. This is really out of character for me seeing as one of the
things I love most in life is naming inanimate objects.
+ Going to the gym
- I was on a HUGE roll back last week and this week I dropped the ball, big time.
I'm going to try and get back there on Monday since this weekend is NUTSO (i.e.
my sister's graduation party and our dog being sick :( ).
+ Being a good friend
- Enough said.

THINGS I DON'T SUCK AT:

+ Putting together furniture
- I am so handy with a drill, you have no idea. I have a tool box that is covered
with glitter and it's awesome. Don't try and tell me otherwise or i'll nail your
head to a 2x4.
+ Sleeping
- I'm a real rebel and I've been sleeping in until 7:15 instead of getting up at
6:45! IMAGINE THAT!
+ Making Changes
- Lately if I say I'm going to do something, I've been following through. This is
an uncharacteristic change for me.

Here are some updates:

Pink Slip is BUSY AS A BIG FAT BEE. I can't even slow down for a second without thinking of something else to do... so you know what I did today? I decided to make ANOTHER project for myself and clean out my attic space at my parent's house! I am going to be moving soon and I am trying to DEJUNK my life. I got rid of so much stuff today. It actually felt good to purge. I am looking at buying some awesome new furniture!

Also, I am totally getting a dog!
I can't wait!

There is a long, scientific explanation about Jemma Kidd's ID Color-Adapt lip gloss, but we're not about to get into it. We're no science majors, and as soon as we hear talk about PH Scales and solubility, our brain is on a one way trip to la-la land.

All we need to know is that this lip gloss DOES in fact change color and adapt to your skin tone. It also stays on, leaving a great stained color look for most of the day. JK, being a model, created this make up line for Target a while ago. Since the collection came about, I notice that my make up bag has a lot more "JK" labels added to it! It's a fun, and super bright collection.

I can do this thing where I save up enough brain power to talk myself into things that I definitely should not buy. This time, I convinced myself that I am in dire, and I mean dire, need of the Christian Louboutin Ron Ron pumps for the PS Grand Opening. Here is how I justified it:

I should definitely buy the CL Ron Ron pumps because opening this store could possibly be the biggest thing that ever happens to me in my life and if that's the case, then I should probably be wearing a pretty great dress and pair of shoes, am I right? Also, what kind of representation for the store would I be if I didn't have these heels in my closet? I can buy them with the 20% off sale that is going on right now, too!

Am I crazy? Or did I do a good job?

Whoever made these jeans is Xanadu style crazy! You have got to be kidding me with these!! I can just imagine some young, potential prostitute, with dragon lady nails and stock in Aqua Net, sitting around thinking about how she can wear the lowest rise jean possible with some type of support, and this is what she came up with! THE BIKINI JEAN. Apparently these are huge in Japan and they're getting ready to hit Europe. If this even becomes acceptable in the U.S. I will have to rethink everything I've ever known.

I can't even remember what happened this week. It was a huge blur of ups and downs..... gag me.

We're getting SO CLOSE to the Pink Slip dates. Each day is going by so fast and I feel like Liv Tyler in Empire Records when she says that there's 24 usable hours in everyday minus the part where there is pill popping... maybe i'll just invest in energy drinks? We'll see.

Today I attempted to golf in the back yard with my sister for about a half hour. I quit when my dad told me that I'm messing up our grass. Golfing kind of stinks. Just sayin'

I don't really feel like writing much else about life because I have so many secrets going on right now! I don't want to leak any unnecessary information!

Basically, all you need to know is that my life is work, work, work, look out the window and wish I was outside, work, work, phone calls, work.

Things that might be lame: New Tattoo Edition

Sunday I'm going to get one of my last two tattoos. I know I always say "Oh this is the last one" every time I go but there are two things left I'd like to get.

I'm not a HUGE fan of text as tattoos. I like to look at pictures better, but I've had two phrases that I really can't decide between right now. I only want to get one, but I'm just not sure which one I want.

1. "Love Is All Around" from my fav. MTM:

There is no one better than Mary Richards. I would trade lives with her in a micro-second. I remember when my mom was pregnant with Lainie, my youngest sister,I was about 7 years old and we'd sit in her bed at night and watch episode after episode back when Nick at Nite had block party summer (and it didn't suck). I really love what MTM brought to the character of Mary Richards and I know that she's not real, but I like to live her way of life everyday. She is kind and giving and whatever she puts out into the world she got back. I just like the sentiment of "Love Is All Around"

2. I'm kind of not leaning towards this choice because I don't want to hear the 'oh nice Elliott Smith tattoo... you lame-o' but ever since I heard waltz #2 off the CMJ music sampler, when I was 15 years old I've wanted to get "She appears composed, so she is, I suppose." It's too perfect, and I've related all too many times, but it also makes me sad, like it's not very hopeful or happy... however, it just really seems to ring true.

I think I'm going with Mary, but... I'm still mulling.

In the last week everything that needed to come together for the opening of the store actually did. I'm having one of those 'I can't believe this is real' moments. There has been stress, and there have been many headaches, sleepless nights and unnecessary worrying, justified worrying and small scale heart attacks. But for as much trouble this has all caused the pros of building this dream far outweigh the cons.

The other day I drove home from the bank and I had one of those moments where I thought to myself "I did it." I've always been hard on myself, ever since I was young. I talk myself into thinking I should be doing more, I should be doing better, I should be further along... but for forty minutes, on my drive home, I just stopped and thought "I did it." Everything is where it needs to be and in one month, I will be getting up everyday and going to work at a place that Carly and I built from the ground up.

I don't know how things will go when we're finally open. We can hope for the best and plan for the worst, but no matter what comes my way, I will always be able to say that I wanted something on this big of a scale and I went out and got it. It's just surreal. Every time we get a call saying that someone liked our product, or each time an email comes up with someone wanting to stop by and see what we have, or getting messages from girls who loved what we put together for them... it makes me feel good. And I know to some people its just clothes, or it's just dresses, and it might sound silly, but to me it's so much more than that.

Maybe i've never said it, or maybe I just never let myself feel it, but I am really proud of myself (and Carly). I'm really proud of us. I'm really proud of Pink Slip as a brand and I can't wait to see where it goes.

It sometimes pains me when Flynn, or Cristalle, or Kim says "Oh why don't we go to _____________ (insert new, delicious bakery here) and get __________ (insert sugary, tasty, dessert here).

In this case it was Crumbs for Cupcakes. They were delish. I tried the hostess cupcake.

I can only imagine how many calories are in one of these cupcakes. These things are the size of your FIST. They're large and in charge and completely delicious.

The thing about Crumbs, unlike Sprinkles, is that Crumbs will deliver. Granted, you have to pay 30.00 in overnight shipping to get the cakes to where you are, at least they still offer the option in case I'm feeling saucy and I want to spend 50 bones on cupcakes.

I'm sad to report I'm back from New York. Each time I go I love it more than the time before. I always, always, always forget to take pictures, or forget my camera at Cristalle's (my home away from home). It always takes three or four days for me to adjust when I get back to Chi. Topshop was really great, as great as I expected, but I still felt it was a little over priced.

THEN, as if these two huge deals weren't enough, we get a call saying that this mirror we've been waiting for is on SALE:

CAN YOU BELIEVE IT! A full weekend filled with amazing deals! I can't stand it. Carly and I were wiped out by this afternoon so we decided not to test fate and quit while we were ahead.

I'm going to New York this week. I am really excited because I miss New York so much. I miss my friends in New York even more.
